Una Burke Up And Coming

So Úna Burke is Irish not British (so I'm already breaking my Brit designers only rule for September) but I could not pass up the opportunity to shout about her latest collection of sculptural belts, corsets, jewellery, handbags and abstract body pieces.

With her distinct construction technique and using leather panelling and brass fittings, Úna develops intricate forms from vegetable tanned leather.

A/W 12's 'Overcome' collection sees silhouettes with gentle curves which wrap about the body in both sensual spirals and spikey forms - inspired by both the gentle and devastating qualities of water.

In researching this subject Úna visited the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, and here she discovered an amazing gilded barge that greatly influenced the aesthetic of this new collection.

The opulent tones of prune, red, gold and green leathers have been directly influenced by the rich colours present in this barge and the repetition of the patterns created by the oars can be seen reflected in the patterns created by her placement of the brass fittings.

I absolutely love the collection, it really is unique and I can see the belts and harnesses working perfectly with this season's military trend or to toughen up a pretty dress.

Burke's designs can be purchased from fashion boutiques in 15 countries and she regularly creates exclusive pieces for catwalk designers, museum exhibitions, films, music performances and private art collections. You can check out her website here.
