A Little Bit In Love With: Alexis Barrell SS 14

Alexis Barrell's Spring Summer collection for 2014, 'highway 1’ was inspired by a trip in a convertible white mustang taken down the Pacific Coast Highway that runs along the California coast. Further research into American surf culture, mixed with Tarantino's 90's classic, "True Romance", and the cult film "Point Break" (the one with Patrick Swayze & Keanu) formed the basis for the character driven and eclectic collection.

A luxe take on Hawaiian shirts, swim shorts and vintage custom surfboard detailing feature strongly, set against textured whites, black leather and neoprene - with Luxury evening wear pieces in silk and neoprene finished with a heavy wetsuit zipper running down the back.

In addition, Alexis uses her signature silks and heavy crepes for draped yet easy pieces with the feel of relaxed beachwear. These include printed chiffon peasant dresses - to be worn off the shoulder with a drawstring waist - crop tops and over-sized silk neon t-shirts worn under hoodies. This Little Girl is particularly in love with the silk brocade pencil skirt worn with a grey parka since it feels like one of those combinations which shouldn't work in theory - but so does.

Alexis has also cleverly developed unique and beautiful silk-blend knits in pastels, monochrome and psychedelic colours, for pleated minis, easy throw-on dresses and boxy vest and jackets, coupled with yet more neoprene detailing. Meanwhile, the colour palette is straight from the scene of a sunset in Malibu, including a washed out pink and faded blues, mixed with a clean sports white and navy.
